As you know, your Mistress doesn't participate in anthologies any longer, unless asked...and that was exactly what happened when my dear friend, HYDRA M. STAR started her own anthology, aptly titled, NO ONE MAKES IT OUT ALIVE.

I contributed two stories and am pleased to say that the first review of this little tome of the terrifically terrible, is a GREAT one!

My Retirement Party At B & N Was A LOT of Fun!!

Greetings Fiends!

I had the best time at my retirement party at B & N Carrollwood, Friday night. I still do the Vampire fans book club, but Friday night served as my retirement party, so we let it all hang out (well, not literally) scared quite a few straights and had the best time.

Mikki and Poulette showed up first with a friend in tow (I suck with names and feel bad that I can't remember hers because she was a blast) and then Dana and Wyllow, then Dale and Rob and Kim and man were the good times rolling.

For some reason, people felt they had the right to come sit back in our area (when it was clearly marked that it was for US for the Vampire fans book club and was PRIVATE) and so I warned each of them, that while I'm not a stickler and don't mind them hanging out with us, if they wanted to read, concentrate, etc, then they'd need to seek solace elsewhere because they were NOT going to get it back where we were.

I duly warned everyone who ventured back to intrude on our space, including how many times the "F" bomb would be dropped and so we were ourselves (irreverent and loud) talked about all kinds of things, from Horror to the Apocalypse and everything in between and I think we shocked, embarrassed and freaked out all those who came to watch the freaks.

Bwahahahahahahahahaha!

I got volunteered for the Apocalypse party on December 21, and so it will be at my house, from 8 - 10.

Here are some pics...I surely went out with a bang! Thanks, ya'll for showing up and making my party, a fun one.

Though I am now officially retired from the world of writing (working now as a publisher and columnist) it does my heart so good to know that I am still able to piss off the idiots of the world.

Just got this, this morning in my e-mail. Apparently, this dumb ass thinks I'm a man, after reading my Erotica...which, admittedly, is brutal and sadistic. It's not for everyone, as this is the most popular reaction to my fetish of hot men dominating other hot men...YUM!

Greetings Fiends…

Feels funny saying that, knowing that I won’t be saying that much, any longer unless something of catastrophically cool proportions happens that I need to post about.

I can’t say that this post comes with a heavy heart, because it doesn’t, but it comes with a sense of nostalgia, knowing that the end of an era is upon us.

I have decided to retire from writing…effective immediately. I didn’t come to this decision lightly, nor did I “just decide” to do it. No, this decision has been years in the making, years in the firming up and years in the planning of announcing it.

For seven years now I have scarred you, scared you, chilled you, thrilled you, sickened you and caused many of you to hate me, and for that, I am eternally grateful.

I am proud to say that I am retiring at the top of the Indie underground. You have made me a multiple-time best-seller and award-winner and a legend in the self-publishing industry, supporting me when I took the road less traveled and for that…I don‘t have the words. But…as with all great things, there must be an eventual end.

I have been on this wild and wacky treadmill a long time…and in that time a lot has happened. I’ve had triumphs, heartaches, a lot of great times and some bad ones too. I’ve met some people whom I adore, many I couldn’t stand and some that I had some good times, with.

To each and every one of you…whether I love or despise you, whether you have put money in my pocket or tried to ruin me, I thank you. You made me a success because of - and I‘m even prouder to say - in spite of, your efforts.

I will be throwing all my energy into my two magazines, Twisted Dreams and the new Country Witch’s Diary. I have also been asked to be on staff of a new magazine owned by my dear friend, Hydra M. Star, and her partner Dave Lipscomb, called, “Infernal Ink,” and though I can’t say anything more than that, for now, I’ll just say that I’m honored.

If you wish to read anything further of mine, it’ll be in one of those three venues because An Eternity of Shadow was my last book.

I am still selling off my print stock because I won’t be doing any further appearances unless specifically pertaining to the production of Twisted Tails The Movie, or Witchcraft related. There are many of you I‘ll miss seeing and still many more of you that it does my heart good to know that I‘ll never have to tolerate you, ever again.

I enjoy print and radio interviews so I‘ll still do those, when asked, and the same for anthologies…if I wish. Ask me, perhaps I‘ll participate for old time‘s sake, and then again, perhaps not.

For the course of its life, I also still have my obligation to the Vampire fans book club.

But as for wanting autographed books at events…won’t happen any longer, so if you’re one of these that claim to love and prefer print books over e-books, get them from me while you can because no more will be ordered.

‘AN ETERNITY OF SHADOWS’

By Andrea Dean Van Scoyoc

This poetically-titled novel is the sequel to ‘Dante’s Diary’ (2011). It is written in two parts: ‘The Lost Memories of Ivana Morriander – Vampire’ and ‘The Estate of Barren Hill – Pennings by Ivana Morriander’.

The story begins with Percival Parkins, owner of the Parkins Occult Journal, being called to an old, gothic mansion where he is shown the newly-found diary written by Ivana. The man who called him, and entrusts him with this discovery, is Dante’s grandson. The mansion, where Ivana used to live and grow roses, is demolished soon after. Parkins prints some poems from the diary in his magazine, just on time for Hallowe’en, and publishes everything in a book a month or so later.

The first diary presents us with Ivana’s reminiscing about the night she was turned into a vampire and her suicidal feelings; reflections on life, unlife and the vampire kind, its scene and hierarchy; thoughts about witchcraft; and a host of romantic and gothic poems, including one written in the style of Poe (Edgar Alan).

Ivana seems to be looking for a meaning or some substance to apply to her unlife and seems to find some in the Estate of Barren Hill in the early years of the 20^th century. We are introduced to the second book via another third party, also a journalist. This second book, while not chronicling the 35 years of the vampire coven, is a series of portraits depicting the vampires that Ivana will always remember: Giraldi Transt-Ofir, Contessa Emmanuelle Federiconi, Czarina Oksanna Trementko, Chamberlyn Cartier-Fazzano, and Peter Francois-Brahm Alexiano.

‘An eternity of Shadow’ is a different look at vampires, a philosophical view from within. Andrea Dean Van Scoyoc deliberately deviates from the usual vampiric path to show us a more introvert perception, a glimpse of the inner life of a vampire. We’ve seen the gory scenes so many times and we’ll see them again. It is refreshing to read the work of someone willing to take a risk and step out (without drowning in syrup). Vampires are more than just a set of fangs or a ‘sexy’ image; they have feelings, too, and personalities as big as the Statue of Liberty…….

Chamberlyn Cartier-Fazzano

Chamberlyn (pronounced SHAMberlyn) was yet another member of the House that I grew to care for. Funny, with a zany sense of humor that few of the others understood, he had a penchant for the paranormal, the strange and the just plain weird.

He was always writing stories (which were called “off-beat,” “bizarre” and “unusual,”) which saw publication in more of the “fringe” type magazines of the day, telling jokes and making up obscenely absurd tales of events that he neither witnessed, nor actually knew anything about.

Think about our tabloid magazines of today and you have them in the ages-past form, of Chamberlyn, long before they ever saw first-time publication on newsstands.

In fact…I’d not be a bit surprised to find out that he started any of the more popular ones of the ages.

His long, black hair (which he kept loosely French-braided down his thin back) and one look into those impish, coal-black eyes set into a face of pure, perfected white stone…if your heart didn’t melt, then you truly had to be one of the undead.

He was beautiful, but he was also a voice of reason. I remember many a time when he stopped me from forgetting my own manners (I tried to behave myself as a lady – I really did) and whalloping (that used to be a favorite word of Roland’s and he’d use it occasionally, just to throw people off. You really can’t expect a man of Roland’s education and breeding to use such a word and he used to…just to shake things up. Oh! Roland…) that bitch, Adeaneana, who did everything she could to piss me off.

Much to my regret, she succeeded…always. I always felt that it was a good thing the estate disbanded when it did because my next step (literally…I was plotting it when Giraldi made the announcement) was to invite that insipid twat over for a night-cap and kill her, leaving her body in my garden for the morning sun.

It was oftentimes Chamberlyn who sat between us, stepped between us and pulled me back when I was about to let Adeaneana, have it.

He wasn’t a royal, which was probably a good thing because I can’t even begin to imagine the havoc he’d have caused in any royal court.

Born in America, New Orleans to be exact, in the late 1700s (which was all he’d say, so he could “keep up the mystery for the ladies,” he told me. Like being a Vampire wasn’t mysterious enough!), he was indeed a ladies’ man.

I can’t tell you how many of those lovely young lasses he seduced, ended up as dinner and I’d rather not think about it because for such a horrible personality flaw as being a simple, stone-cold killer as he was, I liked him.

Oh I know what you’re thinking…that we, Vampires, are all killers and you’re right…we are.

However…some of us employ discretion, killing only for food, or for revenge, or even to save our lives, as I’ve had to do on certain occasions.

Chamberlyn, on the other hand, he killed simply for fun and because he could. He didn’t cross any of his victims, oh no…he’d never do that. Once he’d used them, he didn’t have time for them any longer and so they simply had to die.

I remember him once telling me, “Why on earth would I want a bunch of needy, clingy, whimpering and whiney bitches hanging on me, wanting to know whether or not I love them, whether or not I‘ll marry them, where I’m going, what I’m doing? No thank you! I didn’t have a wife when I was breathing and I certainly don’t plan to have one now that I’m not.”

He then winked at me, putting his mouth close to my ear, his hot breath caressing my lobe, his nostrils inhaling the intoxicating scent of my shampoo… “Unless, Ivana…you’d fancy a handsome young devil like myself, all for your own keeping?”

Yes…he really was that arrogant and presumptuous, but he had a way of doing and being so, that was completely non-threatening.

I remember winking back at him, pulling him lips-to-lips with me, mine just ever so gently touching his and whispering, “My darling Chamberlyn…if I kept you for my own, you’d be nothing more than a pet and what kind of life would that be for you? You’d know pain, you’d know suffering and you’d become well acquainted with my deviousness in a way your most vivid nightmares could never conjure.”

Poor thing…I think I scared him with that revelation of how I like to treat most men, because he wrested himself from my iron-like grip on his smart and elegantly tailored jacket lapels, and backed out of the room.

It took him about a week before he ventured back to speak with me, but when he did, he had a newfound respect for me, which I appreciated.

He told me a story once, about a cousin of his (also a Vampire, but a Witch as well) and it appears that his family had no morals, whatsoever, when it came to killing, as his cousin was far worse than I ever knew Chamberlyn to be.

Now…I’ll put a disclaimer in this diary right now before you get to the story, which is titled (for some odd reason) The Lofters, so that if you wish to skip it, you can.

So here is the sternest warning I can give you, before you read any further. This collection of words is filthy, it is raunchy and it is diabolical. But it also is good…very good, which has me convinced that this tale is nothing more than twisted creativity at its finest and more fantastical imagining by one of the most brilliant storytellers I have ever had the pleasure of knowing.

Knowing Chamberlyn the way I do, I’d wager that, not a word of this story is even remotely true – except the cousin being a Vampire, part.

It’s too bad that this oh-so-talented young man could never have put this gift to more visible use.

As I even often heard Giraldi mutter after some of Chamberlyn’s all night revelries… “What tales that young man can weave…”

Chapter Eleven…A Cruel Mistake…

The night I was turned, once I awakened to my new fate, I took an innocent life – a stranger who stopped to help me.
When I finally got over the initial anger at what had happened to me…(I was consumed with wrath…the betrayal, the assumption, being used and then tossed aside as if I meant nothing to anyone!) I then became suicidal for a long while.
I know what you must think, a suicidal vampire, how cliché. But for me, it wasn’t cliché…I really wanted to die and no matter what I did and no matter how hard I tried…it didn’t happen…

Fallen…

Fallen from grace,
Like a star from the sky,
No reason, no mercy,
She can only ask “why?”
Loved and then shunned,
She cast her heart to the side,
Nothing worth saving,
Not even her pride,
She sits and she cries,
Hopeless and in shame,
Nowhere to go,
And only herself to blame,
Helping hands disappeared,
No kind words to attest,
Hated and loathed,
Her eyes close in rest,
The cuts were made deep,
The red life flowing free,

Chapter Twelve
Could I Be Granted An End?

It was like liquid rose petals, the very first night I summoned the courage to slice open my wrists. It was so silky, so beautiful…so messy. You know how movies always portray suicide as some noble act, something romantic and ghoulishly beautiful?
Well, I’m here to tell you that it is none of those.
It’s sick, it’s disgusting and it’s even worse when any romantic thoughts you may have had about how darkly and dismally elegant suicide is, are squelched by your desire to suck your own body dry.
What was even worse than all of that, was me, down on my hands and knees, cleaning up the bathroom floor, at two o’clock in the morning.
Kind of kills any romantic thoughts or dreams you may have previously had about it, huh? Oh and believe me…I have more than enough evidence to prove my point…it’s not like I haven’t given it more than one shot.
I waited to die, I wanted to die, but I couldn’t. I sat in the sun, sat in the sun until I felt so sick I was sure I would die, but I didn’t. All I managed to do was make myself miserably and disgustingly, sick and weak.
But nope…no death.
It was when that reality sunk in, that I truly wanted nothing more than to take a shotgun and blow my head from my shoulders.
As I sat on the floor mutilating myself over and over, my self-hatred viciously manifesting itself in each stab, in each slice and in each jagged tear, as I sunk the razor deep into my flesh, in my own blood, was when I wrote this next work.
I truly believe that I died that night, what humanity I may have had, died. I had nothing left, I had no one and I was alone…utterly alone and miserable…
I was trapped, for always, in the Hell my life had become. I was in Hell…I was damned…

The Rain

I watch the rain and count my time,
As droplets fall from this body of mine,
With each tear that falls, my end draws near,
No more sorrow, heartache, worry or fear,
I ate my last meal and took my last trip,
As my body grows colder,
Drip, drip, drip,
I read my last book and painted my face,
Now I am ready to go,
To that calm and shadowed place,
With the rain comes the blood, and this storm will be my last,
No more to be haunted from my long regretted past,

Her life was worth nothing, not to her anymore,

Probably The Best Answer I've Ever Given...Why Are Traditionally Published E-Books So Expensive?

As many of you know, your Mistress volunteers on All Experts, giving my time (for free) to help people with publishing and poetry questions.

Sometimes I get some fabulous questions and ones that need to be answered (and have for a while) because the entire world probably wants to know, just no one wants to be the one to ask.

Well, I'll thank this gal, I'll call her Madame X to protect her privacy, for asking what I'm sure is burning in many people's minds.

Here is the question and my answer. Enjoy!

why is it that traditional publishers charge so much for ebooks when they cost so much less to produce? do you think that it is to discourage people from buying them (or maybe rather, to not encourage by charging a low price)?

Greetings, Madame X...

That's a good question and honestly, if someone ever comes up with the exact reason why, I'm sure they'll win the keys to the Universe.

My PERSONAL OPINION (yes, making sure that anyone who may read this, knows this is my OPINION, which may or may not be worth anything to anyone) of why e-books from traditional publishers are so expensive, can be summed up in one word...GREED.

They want to make a living off their authors. Nothing wrong with that, and I'm all for it, but it's a shame that people are WILLING to fork over money they don't have to, just to say they are reading what's popular. I can't think of any other reason that people would read such expensive e-books, when, as you have so accurately pointed out, they cost little to nothing, to produce and pass Indie books by, when they are just as good, if not better (in some cases because they are often written more realistically, more down-to-earth and with more modern grammar, etc, like how people REALLY speak and interact today) than your large-scale publishing house authors.

Now...do some Indies make money? Sure...but for many, not enough to live on (I personally fall into this category. I work a full-time job and own two magazines, in addition to writing, to make ends meet) because we try to keep our prices low, so people will actually buy OUR books, which means we'd have to sell quadruple, every day, what traditional publishers sell, to make up the difference.

Many of us don't quite make that many sales.

WE certainly can't charge $9.99 for an e-book and the fact that the traditional publishers don't have to, but choose to anyway, just proves one thing...GREED...and it's a shame that the mainstream feel the need to encourage that, when they too, don't have to.

There is another choice out there...INDIE produced, e-books.

As long as people continue to buy outlandishly priced books, the more the large publishers will charge for them and why? BECAUSE THEY CAN. Because they know that regardless of price, people will buy them.

That's REALLY sad when you think about it.

As the old saying goes, "there's a sucker born every minute," and as long as the robot sheeple continue to purchase expensive e-books over inexpensive Indie produced e-books, they'll continue to prove that point.

Preface:

To you, the reader of this most extraordinary book, I offer you my greetings. My name is Percival Parkins and I am the owner of the small-time (but ever-growing!) upstate New York magazine, The Parkins Occult Journal and I am indeed proud to present to you, this most extraordinary story….

Now…I’ll say right upfront here, that I have always loved the things that go bump in the night, the shadowed chill that overtakes you while walking past a dark cemetery and the fog that rolls in on an Autumn evening, but never in my life did I expect to find anything this…well…I don’t believe the word, ‘grand,’ would be out of place here.

I’m not a young man, but I’m not old either. I have my full faculties, a head full of hair (it’s white, but it’s still all there!) and all my teeth. I am not suffering from dementia and I don’t see Elvis or any other drug induced or aging brain-type delusions.

I’m as sane as sane comes…but…I have always loved the paranormal. In fact, I grew up in a haunted house. I think all of us know a person or two even, who have a story to tell about the cold spot in the basement, the attic window that slams shut for no reason, the drafts in the hallway and in my case, the ghost of my grandpa, Erastus, walking out the kitchen door to the apple orchard behind he and grandma’s house, after he died.

But Vampires?

Never could you have convinced me that they really exist!

I just can’t fathom (and truth be told, still can’t, but I simply see no way to dismiss this journal!) a being like this woman, Ivana Morriander.

Let me tell you a little about how I came into possession of this diary and then maybe what I have to say will interest you…and maybe even chill you.

As most of you know, I have absolutely NO use for NaNoWriMo. Just me, personally, I think it's just another way to govern the sheeple who can't or won't write on their own without herding and prodding from the shepherd.

Gag.

Either you want to write or you don't. You should NOT need a month devoted to writing to make you do so. If you can't make your lazy ass write on a whim, at YOUR beck and call, then stop now. As it is, you're just contributing to what is killing the publishing/writing industry as it stands now...filling the shelves of failing bookstores with the vanilla-cookie-cutter crap that has all but killed the "word."

However, you are helping those of us who have always marched to our own drummer, so I can't be too ungrateful. People are finally starting to sit up and take notice of US and that's because we refuse to conform.

Anyway...I digress.

My pal, Jesse sent me this link and I am posting it here for those who don't know that it's OKAY to do your own thing.

Don't be a sheeple...join us renegades. Believe me...in the long run, you'll be happier, answering to yourself, than joining a country club of robots who will own you, your actions, your friends, etc (I have seen it firsthand and have lost many people I thought were "friends" when I wasn't country-club material and they wanted in the country-club and were told to "choose") for the rest of your life.

A lot of people (I guess) were worried about what people might think of them, for liking a story like this. That makes it even funnier to me. ;)

For some reason now, it is gaining more attention. Could be because Westerfield Studios has asked for it as well, for a future project. Nothing concrete yet...but Rob, Kim and I had a dinner meeting at Necro to discuss it.

So...with this in mind...I'd like to offer those who might have missed it...a chance to read it.

Border Patrol

The first shot rang out loud and clear.

“You got him!” Ray Thompson cheered. “Right through the heart too. Good shot!”

He adjusted his binoculars.

“There’s more of them coming.”

Alvin Simpson adjusted his rifle on his shoulder and squinted his eye into the scope. “They never stop. It seems like the more of them we kill, the more that come.”

“You’d think they’d have learned by now, that this is our world,” Ray huffed as he watched his partner pick off yet another scrambling runner. “We took over, we moved in, we made this border, we built these fences, what more do we need to do?”

“Just keep killing them off until they’re gone.” Alvin whispered as he pulled the trigger.

Through his binoculars, Ray saw another body tumble to the ground.

“They just want what was once theirs but they’ll never get it back. As you said, Ray, this is our world now. See any more that I might be missing before we head back down the wall? It’s almost time for shift change.”

“No…I think you got ‘em all, but it’ll be night soon and you know how they like to move at night.

Alvin laughed as he shouldered his high-powered rifle.

“The living…they never were very smart anyway.”

The two zombie border patrol agents watched the sun begin the day’s descent as they walked off into the approaching dusk.

Halloween Party At Chateau Van Scoyoc! What A Night! HUGE Announcement Too!

Greetings Fiends!

As most of you know, your Mistress had one HELL of a killer Halloween party at the crypt, Saturday night.

Patrick arrived first with a brain cake (should have taken a pic of it!) in tow and he helped the hubs with the hot dogs.

Brenda showed up a short time later with some snacks and a LOVELY bouquet for me! A little while later, people began trickling in and it was on!

Food was enjoyed, I took loads of pics and had the second unveiling of Dante and Ivana. Rebecca Foster was kind enough to bring them with her and we set them up on my coffee table.

I also made the big announcement of the night...I have just signed with Helm Publishing!

That's right! One door closed, another opened and I stepped through! All this in a matter of one day! Yeah baby!

I'm excited and HUGE plans are already in the works for books 2 & 3 (which I'll tempt you with this much...they'll be one book!) and my new publisher is already gearing up for marketing and I have my first signing lined up under her!

I am ready to go and ready to rock the world with the book 2 & 3 combo!

What about book 1 you say? It'll be re-released as an E-book ONLY...and we have plans for it too, but you have to keep your eyes here for updates!!!

After I made the announcement, we continued to eat, drink and be scary (as my pal Gary's shirt said) and I took pics galore, Pooty picked fights with the other kids and acted ugly (she couldn't have mommy's undivided attention) and for the very first time...Buddha, my Bombay Panther spoke!

Unlike his usual behavior, this time he came out, let people touch him and basically was friendly. Well, I was overjoyed, picked him up and loved on him, which he hates. He very plainly whined at me..."I want..."

Well, I'm used to cats talking and so I said, "Well, what do you want, honey?"

"Down!"

Bailey (my pals Tony and Nette's little girl - who is a real sweetie and a future Fiend, I might add! She's already my little mascot!) said, without missing a beat, "He said he wants down."

Most kids would have been freaked out about a cat talking, but not Bailey, so tell me that isn't a future Fiend right there!

;)

Gary and his gang showed up at about 10:30 or so and we were entertained with Monkey's spot on imitation of Christopher Walken and we had a wonderful night.

The party ended at about 1:30 AM and happy, exhausted and loving the great night I spent with some of the best pals in the world who made my night a great one...fell into bed.

THANK YOU everyone who made the very last event at Chateau Van Scoyoc the best, ever.

Not really? Most Indie authors (unlike your more popular and mainstream authors, because you will NOT be able to get past their secretaries/agents. You won't have that problem with Indie authors...) will be MORE than happy to sell you a print book for much lower than it is listed online.

Remember...places like Amazon tack on their fees and such for listing with them (kind of like renting space I guess you could compare it to) where, if you order right from the author, they can cut you a deal, your book will be signed and most (like myself) will send along freebies, as a , 'thank you.'

Don't like print books or have too many? That's understandable. Had a lady walk by my table last weekend at the Necronomicon convention, where I was a guest, and say, "Your books are on Kindle aren't they? I just have far too many print books."

So, for those of you who have a Kindle or a Nook, then the world is your bookshelf. I don't know of an author whose works are not on either or both.

I know mine are!

'But what about me? I can't afford a Kindle, Nook or any other e-reader?' you say?

Well then, at least where I am concerned, you are in luck. The Dante Artwork Unveiling A MEGA Success!!!

Greetings, Fiends!

The awesome, Rebecca Foster and I had the largely publicized unveiling of Dante at the 30th annual, Necronomicon convention this past Saturday and were we in for a shock!

We packed the hallway!

I was taking a break between book sales and looked up to see Rebecca with a large, covered something in her hands.

"Can I set him here?"

"Of course!" was my answer.

I was sooooooo tempted to peak...but didn't. ;)

So being very aware of the time, I began getting myself situated and look up to see three eager faces at my table.

"We're here for the unveiling."

Oh yeah!

So 2:30 came and I made the hall-wide announcement that Dante was being unveiled and looked up, and it was standing room, only!

Have NO idea where the crowd came from, but I was elated!

My new friend, Mike, walked up and I saw a man with a camera and a woman with a mic...he'd brought in the media!

GULP!!!!

They swung around to catch the table and Dante (Rebecca had also generously left a large and beautifully framed painting of Ivana on my table, as well) and they asked about Dante and what book he was from and then I stepped out of the limelight and turned over the show to the two real stars...Rebecca and Dante.

We were in NO way prepared for the media, but Rebecca did a fabulous job.

I'd like to thank Mike for such a wonderfully kind, gesture as getting the very busy media to come to my table for our humble soiree. It meant the world to us both.

Stay tuned for more exciting news about the Dante's Diary Vampire trilogy and I'll let this much slip...I believe the next art is of Luther. ;)

The Necronomicon Was A Great Time, Despite Lack of Crowd This Year...

Greetings Fiends!

Your Mistress has returned from the 30th annual Necronomicon in St. Pete and while crowds were down, it was great to catch up with everyone again and see many loyal Fiends at my table...and make some new ones.

Started out Friday with set up and then had a rash of back-to-back panels and was barely at my table at all.

Left later that night, exhausted and ready for some rest.

Saturday was a little better, as I only had two panels and began selling right away...

Spirit collected a bit of money himself, precious boy...and while I wish it had been more (it's amazing the stupid crap people will spend money on, but can't find it in their hearts to give to a worthwhile cause, like helping an innocent victim of severe animal abuse) I'm still grateful for the money that was donated.

THANK YOU!

The fabulous Bill Mize and I had one heck of a killer presentation on self-publishing (watch for the link to the video of it which I will post from Bill's site as soon as he lets me know he's got it up) and rocked it...as usual. ;)

Judged the costume contest on Saturday night and enjoyed that.

All in all, despite the woeful lack of crowd this year, it was a good time.

Oh and before I forget...we had the unveiling of Dante and that event is getting a blog of its own, it was so spectacular. ;)

Watch for some MAJOR news upcoming in the next week or so. I think ya'll will be as excited as I am. ;)

My publisher and I have parted ways. The split was amicable and I feel as if a HUGE burden has been lifted from my shoulders.

As you all know...animal rights are very near and dear to my heart. I love all animals but cats and dogs in particular and will do most anything to help save them if they are in peril.

Recently, it has come to my attention, due to the tireless efforts of PENNY EIMS and her devotion to animal rights, the story of Spirit...a 6 month old Pit Bull puppy, caged and starved almost to death, and then dumped, so no one would find out about his abuse.

But some kind hand of fate intervened and he was rescued. However....due to his deplorable state of health, his medical care is VERY expensive.

I had a Pit Bull growing up and to this day...almost 40 years after her death...I STILL miss her. Pits are my favorite breed of dog and I kills me to hear of anything bad happening to them.

If you can...PLEASE donate to SPIRIT and save his life.

I'm refraining from posting this pics of him on my blog because they are shockingly upsetting. Simply click this precious baby's name above, to visit Noah's Ark (the vet who has him) and donate ANYTHING you can.

Times are hard for us all (and I'm hardly financially set) but I'm begging you...ANYTHING you can spare, please donate it toward Spirit's care.

Please believe that I am as upset about this as you are, but Lulu made their decision but I want to make sure that those of you who want these cd's can get them...

The Endless Waltz - Vampire poetry voiced by moi and which will appear in the upcoming Sunbury Press release, The Lost Memories of Ivana Morriander - Vampire. This cd will never again be released and neither will the poems.

The First Annual Vampire Fan Book Club Was One Heck of A Great Time!!!

As you know, this past Friday night kicked off the very first annual, Vampire Fans Book Club at B & N and we had the best time.

I'd like to thank everyone who came and made my night so special!

Dana and Tony kicked butt in trivia (I think I'll start calling Tony, King Trivia) and we had such fun.

I'll be looking forward to the next one in November and will REALLY have to bust my hump to come up with better trivia that Tony can't guess!

Your Mistress had the best time over the weekend, which resulted in two GREAT things happening!

First off, on Saturday, I got to meet my crime-fighting writing partner and fabulous friend, Yvonne Mason and we had the BEST time!!!

I'd received the proof copy for WHEN FATES COLLIDE - MARDI GRAS BOUND and was so happy. I knew that Yvonne was coming to my neck of the woods and was hoping I'd have it to show her for her approval before I made it available to the general public and got the distributed process started.

She loved it and now it's all ready for your eyes too!

But that's not where the good news ends...

In keeping with tradition, there is an error to be found in our new baby...but...it's not within the covers...but somewhere on the outside.

Find it and e-mail either Yvonne or myself (murgaine@gmail.com) subject line of : Mardi Gras Bound Quest with the error and once we have all the entries (deadline will be October 14) we'll put the correct ones in a pile, have a random drawing and some lucky person will receive OUR copy (the very first in print) signed by us both.

Why I Still Love PDF E-Books…

I suppose this blog has been a long time in coming and it’s about time I post it.

The world of publishing is rapidly changing and continues to change before our very eyes, every single day.

With the advent of Kindle and Nook, previously hard-to-open or even closed, doors were miraculously flung wide to receive a whole new generation of techno-savvy readers, armed with the latest mediums for devouring the, at one time, printed word.

For authors struggling to get their names out there, this has been a miracle, of sorts. No longer is there really an elite tier of authors who revel in their smug world of being someone special.

Much to the chagrin (and bane) of the snobs of the industry (and yes, there are a few) anyone can offer their works for sale on Kindle and Nook…unlike in the days of the solely printed word, where you could (and some often still do in some asinine attempt to be one of the “in crowd”) spend your entire life and possibly never see your book in print.

Unless you turned to POD, which could, would and still will, open up a can of worms for those brave enough to take that road…

But that is another blog and one better kept for another time. This particular blog is devoted to PDF e-books and why, even with the burst of modern technology, I’ll remain a die-hard fan.

At one time, when they were still new to the world, PDF books were the rage. If you wanted an e-book, you accepted a PDF or you didn’t get an e-book…end of story as few (if any) other formats were offered.

I know of a few publishers that made quite a living selling nothing but e-books.

Though I swore I’d never get behind e-books, with the advent of .txt files that are oftentimes used for e-readers (simply because of their conversion ease) I see now that PDF books are really something special and I’m truly sorry that I didn’t spend more time lauding their aesthetic beauty, rather than pushing for the next bigger and better thing.

Hindsight being 20/20 the way it is, I look at PDF’s now as a true stroke of genius in the publishing world.

Let me give you an example of what I mean…

Being the creative rebel I am, I love to incorporate different, unique and oftentimes beautiful fonts to set apart certain things in my works. For example…in my Nachmasheeghan pirate series, the very first book of the trilogy, the new Constable in town has a brand new sign to go along with his earned station in the town. I used an elegant but commanding font to set apart the sign over the jail door, from the rest of the text and let me tell you, it makes quite an impression, actually seeing the words in such eye-catching script.

If you order The Grounds of Nachmasheeghan via Kindle, you’re going to miss that, as the book is in .txt, which is very plain and has no real way to fancy it up.

I often do the same (flourish) chapter headings and other text I’d like set apart from the rest of the story, such as diary entries (you’ll find these in the next two books of the Dante’s Diary series) but I feel that it is already a lost art.

People like convenience, and more-often-than-not, convenience will win out over just about anything else, any day of the week.

But I despise change (a trait I inherited from my dear little daddy) and now that I know what I had, now that it’s gone, I will try to start a PDF revolution once again.

I have already started my book nightclub (my dream is to own a Gothic nightclub and I figure my online one will be the closest I’ll ever get) and I offer nothing but PDF copies of my books but…if you so desire, I will sell them in print as well, but PDF was, is and will continue to be the main focus of CLUB MIDNYTE.

For those that choose to enjoy the sheer magnitude and beauty of what a PDF document has to offer and to those who can’t afford a Kindle or Nook, Club Midnyte just might be the venue for you to journey to for some cool reads.

For those who can’t afford a Kindle or Nook and don’t mind the bland wasteland of a simple text document, there is a free downloadable Kindle app for your computer that will allow you to read Kindle books on your computer…but then again…you’re not reading a PDF.

Can I revive this now-deceased venue for e-books? Not likely…but I’m sure going to give it one heck of a try!

“You got him!” Ray Thompson cheered. “Right through the heart too. Good shot!”

He adjusted his binoculars.

“There’s more of them coming.”

Alvin Simpson adjusted his rifle on his shoulder and squinted his eye into the scope. “They never stop. It seems like the more of them we kill, the more that come.”

“You’d think they’d have learned by now, that this is our world,” Ray huffed as he watched his partner pick off yet another scrambling runner. “We took over, we moved in, we made this border, we built these fences, what more do we need to do?”

“Just keep killing them off until they’re gone.” Alvin whispered as he pulled the trigger.

Through his binoculars, Ray saw another body tumble to the ground.

“They just want what was once theirs but they’ll never get it back. As you said, Ray, this is our world now. See any more that I might be missing before we head back down the wall? It’s almost time for shift change.”

“No…I think you got ‘em all, but it’ll be night soon and you know how they like to move at night.

Alvin laughed as he shouldered his high-powered rifle.

“The living…they never were very smart anyway.”

Oh yes, times...they are a changin' and I for one am overjoyed every time I see a story like this!

I have known for years that the dinosauric and elitist large-scale-publishing house-attitudes were going to cause a second extinction and it appears I was right.

But...I'm not the only one. Others who have braved the online personal attacks, hate threads started about us on forums because we dared to go-it-on-our-own (rather than being the robotic, conformist sheeple that our detractors and those who look down their noses at us, have always been) saw it too.

So, for those of you out there in the "country-club" who continue to cling to a laughable idea that you are somehow better than us self-pubbed and not-of-your-approval (meaning that even in the small-press world there are snots who think the small press they are with is somehow better than the ones us renegades are with) small press authors, here's your wake up call.

And if I may suggest? You might want to get with the program before you wake up and find yourself left behind, then have to eat crow and claim that others you approve of (your friends) have pioneered the field of self-publishing (and you ride that fantasy wave as well) when ya'll are light years behind those of us who really did.

Things are really picking up here in my corner of the cemetery and I'm so excited! I have some good news to share and some sad...but okay news to share, as well...

My newest short, stand alone book, THE HANGING TREE is now available and what a story it is! Based on a TRUE event, for those that like a good, spooky campfire tale...this just might be the book for you! :)

Now, in other not so good and a little sadder news...the publisher/distribution service for my spoken word cd's will no longer be offering them, after October 15, so if you'd like a copy of my ONLY two spoken word cd's, IN SHADES OF GRAY AND SHIVERS OF BLUE which is short stories, three of which are currently in motion picture production and one story of which is so rare...(until I resurrected this cd) I'd forgotten I'd even recorded it, and my only collection of spoken-word Vampire poetry, THE ENDLESS WALTZ, then you'll want to snap them up now.

Not sure if I will be selling them personally, (I have the files, cases, cd's and light scribe for that ultra smooth and professional look in cd engraving, to do so) once they are off the market. If fan demand dictates, I will, but otherwise, I will simply sell my personal stock off until it is gone.

Ivana's Next Diary Has A Home!

That's right my Fiends...The Lost Memories of Ivana Morriander - A Vampire's Journal, the next diary in the series, Dante's Diary, has been picked up by Sunbury Press!

This diary, written during different intervals in her life and then hidden away never to be found (and subsequently almost lost forever) is a smaller and more personal collection of many of Ivana's innermost thoughts and musings and covers things lost and found, precious and troubling, hopeful and heartbreaking.

It's surely a book not to be missed if you still have questions left over after reading the first diary!

I'm ecstatic that it has been accepted, as there are never any guarantees that a publisher will want a second book, just because they took the first. The 'take a hike,' possibility is always there...so yes, I'm OVERJOYED!!!

The Vampire Costume party at Chateau Van Scoyoc on October 29 will double as a celebration for this FABULOUS news.

No details yet, as I just got word of its acceptance, but keep your eyes here as updates trickle in!

Saturday was a wonderful day at the Dream Come True event, for Jessika Biele, a really sweet young lady fighting Cystic Fibrosis.

It was my honor and pleasure to attend her event and lend my support.

Arrived at 1 PM to an already packed Courtside Grille in Tampa. Met up with Rick Danford whom I hadn't seen in years. It was good seeing him again (and meeting his daughter) and his sister (whom I'd never met, but it was a pleasure to do so!) showed me to my table.

I set up and immediately, people began coming over. Met a lot of really cool folks.

I knew the event was going to go well when it kicked off at 2 PM with my favorite Lady Gaga (put your tongues back in your mouths, I listen to a little bit of everything!) song, Poker Face!

Made me think of my dear friend, Jeane Trend-Hill who is a huge, Lady Gaga, fan! :)

The star of the show arrived soon after and it was such an honor meeting her.

Ya'll know that when I get a good laugh, I share...

But what I can't wrap my head around is WHY do the morons review my books yet I have to BEG intelligent people to do so?

I spat coffee all over my keyboard I laughed so hard at this pathetic excuse for a "review."

It's apparent the reviewer has an axe to grind against me (it's woefully obvious as you can feel the venom just dripping from her so, well-thought out review...bwahahahahahah!) so someone hand her a Kleenex, then save some for yourself.

You'll need them to clean up the mess you make from laughing so hard. The idiot makes it a point of mentioning that the book is about me. Well, so does the description...that it's about hauntings in MY life...so where was the confusion???

Haters...at least they're good for a laugh and sales, but honestly, you'd think if their goal is to make me look bad, or to somehow discredit me, they'd not bother. Do these morons not realize they are helping me?

Sales of this book are absolutely through the roof and now I know why!

So...if you need a laugh, go have a read, and remember...better for the world to just think you're stupid, than to post a totally off-the-wall review, and remove all doubt! ;)

Your Mistress is overjoyed at the responses I've been getting for the Vampire Book Fan Club so I've decided to post this help FAQ for your perusal:

1. What is the Vampire Fan Book Club?

The Vampire Fan Book Club is a new event sponsored by a local B & N that I was asked to host. The purpose of the bi-monthly event will be to showcase all forms of vampire books, from YA, to real to fiction.

The group is meant to be fun, informative and to open up the reading world to new authors, as the Vampire world is filled with them and unless they have been lucky enough to have their works made into movies...I'm sure they can use the exposure.

That's what this group is all about because it's NOT just for famous Vampire authors. Whether you have 10 books on the market or 1 book, whether you have a world-wide following or you're a newbie that no one has ever heard of, as long as your work is on the market and people can buy it...I want to feature you.

2. So this is a fun group?

Yes! I've been out of High School for over 20 years. I have no intention of going back, so this group will be nothing but FUN!!! There will be trivia, costume contests, Q & A sessions, debates, you name it...we'll have fun with it.

3. Trivia and costume contests? So you'll be giving away freebies?

You betcha! Vampire authors from all over the world have begun mailing their books to me. At each meeting, I'll tell everyone who the next featured author will be. Those who want to, may purchase or download (most authors have their books on Kindle or even in pdf format for those who don't own e-readers) those books, we'll discuss that author's works, what you liked, disliked, how their works compare to other author's works, what sets their work apart, etc.

Before the close of each meeting...I'll have a trivia contest, which can be on anything from popular Vampire movies, to REAL Vampire lore. Whoever answers correctly will win a FREE copy (autographed by the author) of the book that will be featured next.

I'll also have just general trivia throughout the night and the lucky winners will get Vampire inspired goods!

Also...every event, we'll have a costume contest. Whoever wins, will also win a nice prize.

4. Seriously, we can come dressed as Vampires?

Yep...in fact, the B & N rep who asked me to host this event, has stated that Vampire-wear is most welcome!

5. How do I get you my book? Can I send you a pdf? Will B & N start stocking my book in the store if you feature it?

To have me feature YOUR book at the event, just contact me at murgaine@yahoo.com (subject line: Vampire Book Fan Club. I WON'T open e-mails with a blank subject line, so please make sure to include that subject line so I don't miss your e-mail!) for my mailing address. Please make sure to send your book, signed (whoever wins the book will like it autographed I'm sure, so don't forget your John Hancock!) and with business cards, so I can promote your book the entire night it is featured.

Sorry, but no pdf's. I need physical books to give out. However...if your books are available via Kindle or Nook and even as a pdf via Lulu, etc, make sure that you have them linked on your website or at least let me know that they are available that way, so I can tell those who wish to buy them that way.

I'm also sorry to say that B & N IS NOT changing their store/business policy just because this event is being hosted in their store. Self-Published and POD authors books are still not eligible for store stocking (meaning your books won't be carried in their stores, on their shelves - even if they are available on B & N.com. If you are a self-pubbed or POD author, most likely, your books ARE on B & N.com...but not in stores and that won't change) but I have confirmed with the rep that she does not mind me featuring self-pubbed and POD authors.

6. Can I bring my Nook to each meeting?

You bet! In fact...PLEASE do! Nook is awesome and B & N will appreciate the loyalty.

7. Will you be giving away any of your Vampire books?

Sure will! I only have a few on the market (I genre/sub-genre hop so I don't write just Vampires) but they are available via Print and Kindle and Dante's Diary is available via Print, Kindle AND Nook:

It's going to be every other month, starting September 30 from 7 - 8:30 PM at the B & N Carrollwood!

She is being introduced to Dante (in the book) and should have Ivana completed by the start of Necro!
